I Love the Go-Go

So, when I moved to D.C. I was told about this genre of music called Go-Go. Since I do appreciate all types of music, I knew a little something about the Go-Go. Really, all I knew was Chuck Brown, and it pretty much stopped there. I definitely gave it a chance, but I didn’t hear it enough and wasn’t into it.

Then I met Kevin– my fiancé, and he gave me a new perspective on Go-Go. He told me it isn’t just a type of music, it is a lifestyle, it is emotion and innovation. He, as a D.C. native, of course, said other positive words about his hometown’s music. Go-Go by definition, is basically a subgenre associated with funk, that originated in Washington D.C.

Kevin introduced me to The Junkyard Band, Backyard Band, E.U. (Experience Unlimited), and UCB.

When I really listen to these bands, I start to feel happy and the need to dance and to just have a good time! From what I hear, that’s how it’s supposed to make you feel. I even have a favorite band now– The Black Alley Band. They have a way of infusing Go-Go with other forms of music, which I can appreciate. They are just hands down AWESOME!

I recently got to watch them live while Downtown. Since my videos were poorly recorded because I tried to sing, (sigh, I’m sorry), I included some of their actual videos below. I have a few old schools as well.

After you listen, I’m sure you will be come a fan.

Get on up and enjoy, The Go-Go.

My Journey Begins

  Happy New Year!

2015 has swiftly crept upon me. In a blink of an eye, I am in the year    where my whole life is going to change–for the best, of course. I will have my masters degree, a new job, going BACK to Jamaica, I’m 25 (whoop whoop!), and I am blessed to be marrying the love of my life. But to think about all of the blessings God has placed before me this year still is a bit scary.

Stories coming soon 🙂

More fun with Ms. Erykah Badu

Yes, I am a complete fan of Erykah Badu and was too excited to finally see her in concert this past year. She performed at The Filmore of Silver Spring, Maryland. There were so many people in this little area, all under the same vibe. It was amazing! She would definitely be my friend in real life…of course of she knew me. Haha, one day. Until then, here are the pictures I TRIED to take…and some video.

Outfit for the night 🙂

Love Ms. Badu ❤

Outfit for this chill night 🙂

Can I get a DRUM please?

Living in Washington D.C. has truly been an amazing adventure. From concerts, to sporting events or just nights out on the town! One thing I heard all fall and winter….and spring was, “wait until the summer! You will LOVE it!” I mean, of course everyone loves the hot weather, the beautiful cherry blossoms and the smell of food trucks on every corner, but this past Sunday I saw a part of D.C. I was not expecting. Let me explain. I meriwas driving down 16th street NW, Sunday afternoon. I think coming from Rita’s Ice Custard–>>Sidenote: this will be in a post SOON! ;-)–>>, but just as I passed Harvard St. I  heard… bum bum bababum bum, bum bum bababum bum, getting louder and louder. Now me, being a social butterfli and all, of course parked my car quickly in the FREE weekend parking and followed the sounds…

I found myself walking up these massive stairs, passing beautiful floral arrangements and trees everywhere. It was actually quite romantic, (sigh…sucker for love <3)…anyway, I made my way up the stairs and ran in to a ginormous group of people, all gathered around in a circle, hovering over a line of hand drummers! There was also saxophone player (shout out to the saxophones!)…but the lovely drum family, ahh! From Bongos and Congas, it was amazing! I must say, what made this even better was the dancing that came with the music. An even larger group of people of many cultures were on the opposite side of the drummers juking and line drumdancing together. Moving their hands, feet and butts everywhere! It was hilarious to watch the leader get everyone excited, I don’t think I have seen a man shake his butt so hard in my life, haha! Classic! You know, I had to dance a little bit too.

I asked a few people what was going on and I was told this was called the Meridian Hill Park Drum Circles, which have been going on since the early 1900’s. I learned that there is so much history and tradition to why the Drum Circles exist…not just for the love of music, but its purpose was and is to honor the ancestors of the African-American Community.  I also found out that Meridian Hill Park is also referred to as Malcolm X Park (Cool facts…mhmm!)

Well, I tried to not dance to much and get some good photos and video. So take a look and ENJOY! This was truly an exciting event for me as I explored “The District.” I can’t wait for my next spot!

Until next time…

Chocoholic? Here’s a place you’ll LOVE!

photo 5 sala

Have you ever had a taste for great ambiance, fashionable seating, a  mojito and of course…CHOCOLATE?! Well, although I did not think I could mix a minty mojito with my favorite sweet, chocolate this luxurious restaurant totally enlightened me and my taste buds!

This week, I stopped by Co Co Sala, which is located in NW Washington D.C. between 9th and 10th street. It really is an acquired taste to mix chocolate with many items on their menu including my drink of choice, the “Co Cojito.” I also tried their sliders which were photo 4fine as well. This place is a bit pricy if you have a large appetite, but I would definitely recommend getting fancy and chic one night with your girlfriends and treat yourself to something unique. Their wine glasses are also quite sexy looking. 😉

Have fun and enjoy some photos I was able to take below!

Well, until next time…

Janelle Monáe and Erykah Badu’s ‘Q.U.E.E.N.’ Video – REMARKABLE

Janelle-Monae-Queen-VideoYESSSS…I LOVE ❤ this song! Not only did Janelle Monáe create an epic socially conscious song with a fun, funky beat, but she brought along the PHENOMENAL Queen herself Ms. Erykah Badu a.k.a. “Badula Oblongata”! (One of my favorites by the way). Honestly, as soon as I saw this video I knew it would be a replay type of situation. 🙂

“Q.U.E.E.N.” is from Janelle Monáe’s sophomore album, The Electric Lady, which is coming sometime this year. She posted a teaser video earlier last week for “Q.U.E.E.N.” but now the COMPLETE video’s here, and it’s a reason to get reallllly hype…or at least interested!

Janelle and this song are HOT FIYA, FUN and BRILLIANT! And, I am going to explain, at least 5 reasons why “I” feel so:

  1. One main reason is that I love how Ms. Monáe has used social critical theory, black and feminist thoughts to address many issues concerning black women, identity, sexuality and race.
  2. She is truly a funky hipster with integrity. She is always Janelle Monáe, and probably wont be changing anytime….EVER!
  3. I love how she keeps her black and white concept, but spices it up with some tight black pants and black and white open-toe heels!
  4. She shows femininity without sexuality.
  5. Lastly, ERYKAH BADU is in the SONG! (this had to be in the top 5 for obvious reasons) #Period ❤

All in all, I feel Janelle Monáe is trying to produce and encourage women young and old to be QUEENS, because that IS what we are, and to LOVE yourself no matter what. The sad part is that she is a highly underrated artist and as much as I hope young girls, ESPECIALLY, will listen to this song and the context of what it is saying. Sadly, I am sure being a Barbie girl has completely brainwashed many ideas of empowerment for young girls…Black girls at that…Thanks Nicki. I guess she did say to “go to college” …right? -__-

I love Ms. Badu and becoming such a fan of Ms. Monáe and I look forward to her upcoming album. Be sure to check out the video below and SHARE IT WITH YOUR LITTLE SISTERS, COUSINS, FRIENDS, ETC.

Let me know you thoughts alright lovely people!!!

Well, until next time…

Lil Wayne Sends Apology to Till Family

LilWayne_EmmettTill-MMXLIIWednesday, Lil Wayne sent off a letter to the family of the late Emmett Till to “acknowledge” the distress he caused the family when he compared Emmett’s violent death with the violent way he has sex with women. (quite disturbing…to say the least)

However, according to Till family representative, the letter did not present a stated apology…

Reports TMZ:

“Airickca Gordon-Taylor — Executive Director, Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation and Till Family Representative — tells TMZ the family does not view the letter as a formal apology.”

“While it’s commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to ‘not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music,’ this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned.”

Take a look at the letter below:

Dear Till Family:

As a recording artist, I have always been interested in word play. My lyrics often reference people, places and events in my music, as well as the music that I create for or alongside other artists.

It has come to my attention that lyrics from my contribution to a fellow artist’s song has deeply offended your family. As a father myself, I cannot imagine the pain that your family has had to endure. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge your hurt, as well as the letter you sent to me via your attorneys.

Moving forward, I will not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in my music, especially in an inappropriate manner. I fully support Epic Record’s decision to take down the unauthorized version of the song and to not include the reference in the version that went to retail. I will not be performing the lyrics that contain that reference live and have removed them from my catalogue.

I have tremendous respect for those who paved the way for the liberty and opportunities that African-Americans currently enjoy. As a business owner who employs several African-American employees and gives philanthropically to organizations that help youth to pursue their dreams my ultimate intention is to uplift rather than degrade our community.

Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr.
Lil Wayne

Do you feel that this was a formal and appropriate apology for completely disrespecting not only the Till family, but the pain and suffering of Blacks during that time?

Please, enlighten me…

By the way, Lil Wayne is planning a visit to the DMV later this summer…if he is healthy enough… O_o I’ll keep you posted on that.

Well, until next time,

[NEWS] Rapper Chris Kelly of the 90s duo Kris Kross has died at age 34

Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly of 1990s hip-hop duo Kris Kross was pronounced dead this evening after being found unresponsive in his Atlanta home..The official cause of death is pending in autopsy.

This is crazy and very shocking for me, although I was only a toddler when Kris Kross hit the hip-hop scene. I remember being in the back of my dad’s car jumping trying not to choke myself with the seat belt! This was a classic jam! At this moment I keep jumping around repeating the same verse–

“Some of them try to rhyme but they can’t rhyme like this…Go Go!” (As I jump around)

Well, it is getting late and I just have to say, good night and rest in peace to the our homie Chris Kelly a.k.a…“miggida miggida miggida Mac Daddy.”

Be sure to WATCH and enjoy the classic Kris Kross joint, “Jump” below.

India is BACK, FABULOUS and lighter?! [LISTEN] to NEW song “Cocoa Butter”

India Arie is honestly one of my favorite singers in the new age Neo-Soul…she brings it! I am excited to see a wonderful person make wonderful music and I’m sure you will get with this song once you hear it. It definitely is an “India” song, but I still love it how she uses funny common analogies to speak on healing and trusting again and how this man is “like cocoa butter on my heart.”

The song is “COCOA BUTTER” off her upcoming fifth studio album, SongVersation, which is set to drop this summer, June, 25.

Miss. Arie has also been scrutinized because of the photo on her single album cover. Apparently, she is falling into the trap of lightening her beautiful dark chocolate skin. Now, I am not the one to pick on such things because I never got that vibe from her, EVER. She has always been so proud and confident in her skin that I really think this is just an album cover…people should just pay attention to the song and embrace her. Plus it is just one cover! Goodness…

But, here are some things India said in response via Twitter :

“Personally speaking! i’m happy to say I have NOT BLEACHED my skin LOL! ROTF at the thought.”

She added, “1. I wouldn’t endanger my health that way 2. i’m so in love with myself I have no DESIRE to BLEACH myself. 3. The GLOW you see IS (magnificent) lighting 4. THE LIGHT you see, Well that’s all ME!!”

She is great! It is pretty laughable, but hey everyone in entitled to their own opinion. *Shrugs*

I will let you get your own feel for the song AND the new cover! Leave your feedback below!
